Recent inspections conducted across Canada by various
Transportation of Dangerous Goods Inspectors of Transport Canada have discovered the use
of non-acceptable cylinders used for fire extinguishers, refrigerant gas recovery and
scuba diving.
You are advised that any cylinder manufactured after December 31, 1992, and used to
contain dangerous goods in Canada, must display a Transport Canada (TC) specification
mark. The "TC" specification mark indicates that the cylinder was
manufactured,
inspected and tested in accordance with Transports Canada safety standards.
Presently,
these safety standards differ from those found in the United States.
Under section 8 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act 1992 it is an
offence to "sell, offer for sale, deliver, distribute, import or use a standardized
means of containment unless it displays all apllicable prescribed safety marks".
Many of the cylinder manufacturers construct cylinders that meet both the Transport Canada
(TC), and the United States (DOT) safety standards. These dual specification
cylinders should be requested at time of purchase.
Your co-operation in this endeavour is appreciated. If you or any of your association
members have any questions please contact our Region Office at (514) 283-5722 or by email
at gagnoh@tc.gc.ca.
