What we do?
Transport Canada' mission is to develop and administer policies, regulations and services
ensuring the best possible transportation system.
Its goal is to develop the
transportation system and help to make it safe, efficient, affordable, integrated and
environmentally friendly.
Transport Canada is primarily responsible for safety and security. Within the
legislative framework governing its activities, therefore, Transport Canada is responsible
for inspecting transportation facilities, issuing licences and permits, providing
certification, conducting research and building awareness of safety in air, marine and
land transportation.
In the Quebec Region, Transport Canada has a staff of about 450, deployed as
follows:
- 60% responsible for safety and security (primarily inspectors and technicians);
- 30% manage transportation programs;
- 10% provide general and corporate services.
Under its program to transfer some of its facilities to the private sector or local
communities, Transport Canada is also responsible for managing port and airport
commercialization and transfer, providing financial assistance to ease the transition, and
managing transportation facilities still under the Department's purview.
The government of Canada is also represented in Quebec by two agencies related to
transportation: the Transportation
Safety Board and
the Canadian Transportation
Agency.
Finally, Transport Canada dispenses most services in Quebec through its Service Centres.
