The "gateway to the continent" at the heart of the Gulf of St Lawrence, the Magdalen Islands depend primarily on marine transport for contact with the continent and economic activity (fishing, trade and tourism).

The Magdalen Islands centre provides almost all marine services available from Transport Canada, apart from vessel registration (which is only available in Montreal and Quebec City) and certification of seafarers (which is available on special request). Basic information on all Transport Canada activities, however, can be obtained locally.

The following services are available at the Magdalen Islands Service Centre:

- Certification of Canadian vessels
- Pollution prevention and monitoring
- Inspection of foreign ships under Harbour Control
- Monitoring of transport of dangerous goods
- Application of occupational safety and health measures and inspection of ship's tackle
