Forestry and mining activities in the North
Shore hinterland led to the construction of a railway and deep water port to ship ore from
Port-Cartier to processing plants. Grain is also shipped across the world. In view of the significant marine and port activity at
Port-Cartier, Transport Canada maintains a satellite service centre there to serve local
clients. While most services are available locally, ship registration only occurs at the
Montreal and Quebec City centres. Qualification of ships' officers is available on
request. Importantly, the Centre is qualified to dispense basic information on all
Transport Canada activities.
The following services are available at Port-Cartier:
- Certification of Canadian vessels
- Monitoring of loading and transshipment of high-risk cargoes
- Pollution prevention and monitoring
- Inspection of foreign ships under Harbour Control
- Monitoring of transport of dangerous goods
- Application of occupational safety and health measures and inspection of ship's tackle
