Transportation and the One-Tonne Challenge (OTC)
Canada's One-Tonne Challenge calls on all Canadians to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by one tonne. Find out more about the Challenge at: www.climatechange.gc.ca
Transportation is responsible for 25% of Canada's total GHG emissions - of this, two thirds is attributed to personal transportation.
Transport Canada plays a lead role on issues involving sustainability, active transportation and urban transportation. TC works in close partnerships with business, institutions, and all levels of government on climate change solutions. Here are some of the ways in which TC and its partners are taking action:
- Moving on Sustainable Transportation (MOST) - A contribution program for sustainable transportation projects.
- Urban Transportation Showcase Program - Five-year program which provides funding to municipalities to demonstrate, evaluate, and promote effective strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from urban transportation.
- The Advanced Technology Vehicles Program assesses vehicles with advanced powertrains, materials, chassis designs, emission controls, fuels, and other technologies to measure their impact on safety, energy efficiency and the environment.
- Commuter Options Guide - Transport Canada is pleased to offer Canadian employers a practical and comprehensive guide to improving commuter options for their employees. With a focus on Canadian examples and resources, this guide covers the full range of ways that commuting can be made easier, healthier and less expensive by improving the alternatives to driving alone.
