Impacts and Adaptation

Transport Canada has been involved in various initiatives to address climate change impacts and vulnerabilities on Canada's transportation infrastructure. Climate change impacts cut across all regions and a wide range of economic sectors. The transportation sector is widely recognized as being important for climate change mitigation, but until recently little attention has been given to how transportation will be affected by climate change or how it will have to adapt.

All modes of transport are sensitive to weather and climate to some extent. Canada has more than 1.4 million kilometres of roads, 50,000 kilometres of rail lines, over 1,700 airports, and hundreds of ports.

The following sections provide you with more information on climate change impacts and adaptation in the transportation sector.
