NPRI Reporting Software
(Update 1 April 2002)

IMPORTANT! Please read prior to installation!

The 2001 version of the NPRI software distributes several Microsoft components that may impact other applications on your system. The components being distributed are the Microsoft Windows Installer, the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6, and the Microsoft Jet engine version 3.51. Environment Canada has tested these components extensively on several operating systems. Users of Microsoft Access and certain multi-user configurations of Windows may encounter two minor problems, are described at the end of this document. It is important to note that these problems are not with the NPRI software, but with the underlying Microsoft components being used by the software.

If you fall into one of these groups or have any other concerns about installing the NPRI software, please have your Information Technology staff contact your nearest regional NPRI office for a technical description of the compatibility issues and solutions prior to installation. The Web site will be updated as necessary should any new issues be discovered.

Disclaimer: Environment Canada (or those companies whose products were used to create this product) assumes no liability for any special, incidental, indirect or consequential damages whatsoever including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss arising from the use of this software. • Windows 9x, Windows NT version 4 Service pack 5 or above, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
  • Pentium III (300 Megahertz or better)
  • 32 megabytes or more of RAM
  • A video card capable of supporting 64,000 colours with an 800x600-screen resolution
  • A CD-ROM drive
  • A hard disk with 50 or more megabytes (Mb) of free space prior to installation.

Installing the NPRI Reporting Software

CD-ROM:

  • NOTE: Instructions are also included on the CD package.
  • Insert the NPRI CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. The NPRI CD browser should automatically launch. If the CD browser does not appear, open Windows Explorer, select the CD-ROM drive and double-click on the file Setup.exe.
  • The CD browser will allow you to install the NPRI Reporting Software as well as view the NPRI guidance documents on the CD.

Download from the Web site (the 2001 NPRI Reporting Software is located at the bottom of this Web page for download):

  • Download the setup file for the NPRI Reporting Software to a directory on your hard disk (e.g., c:\windows\temp).
  • Run the setup file, it is a self-extracting archive.

NOTE: Windows 9x and NT users

If you are running any version of Windows (9x or NT) other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you may be asked to restart your system up to two times during the installation process. Once will be for the installation of the Windows Installer package and once for the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). These restarts are required for the installation and for the software to properly function.

NOTE: Windows NT, 2000, XP users

You may not be able to install the NPRI Reporting Software if you do not have sufficient privileges to do so, or if your company has security policies in place that prevent it. Normally, if your system has Windows 2000 service pack 1 or Windows XP installed, ‘Power User' privilege should be sufficient to install this software. If service package 1 has not been installed on your system, you may be required to have ‘Administrators' privilege and be asked to restart your system once for the NPRI Reporting Software to be successfully installed.

Minor Problems That May be Encountered

Users of Windows with Multi-user Logins

Testing revealed a problem in MDAC 2.5, which was confirmed by Microsoft, and may impact users of Windows 95 whose systems are set up to permit multiple user login profiles with individual user preferences being retained. (Microsoft did not confirm the existence of this problem with other versions of Windows 9x.) An example of this would be a machine used by two people who have selected individual settings such as wallpaper, cursors, colours, sounds, etc. After installation, some of the user preferences may be changed or missing. While annoying, this problem is not destructive and data and operability of the PC are not at risk.

To avoid this problem, you can:

go to the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/data/download_260rtm.htm and manually install MDAC 2.6 prior to installation of the NPRI software

OR

after installation of the NPRI software, remove the following key from the Windows registry which Microsoft indicates should correct the problem:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"mdac_runonce"=
"C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\runonce.exe"

Environment Canada has developed a registry patch for this problem that is available below.

Users of Microsoft Access

After installation of the NPRI software, other Visual Basic applications looking in Access databases for data that contains trailing spaces will no longer find the data sought. This is due to the trailing spaces being truncated. An example of this would be a field in an Access database containing the text "Apple " instead of "Apple".

Environment Canada has discussed this problem with Microsoft; who was unable to determine if the problem is specific to either the Jet engine or the MDAC components being installed. Microsoft, however, believes that this problem will have a limited impact on users in the general population, including those of the NPRI software.
