NPRI REPORTING SOFTWARE
INSTALLATION NOTES

Please read these important notes regarding the CD and installation of the reporting software prior to installation!

The 2003 version of the NPRI software requires the prior installation of several Microsoft components; the Microsoft Windows Installer version 2.0 or greater, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or greater, the Microsoft Jet engine version 3.51 or greater, and Internet Explorer 4 service pack 2 or greater.

If you have concerns about installing the NPRI software, please have your Information Technology staff contact the NPRI Help Desk (at 1-877-877-8375 or by e-mail at NPRIHelpdesk@ec.gc.ca) or your regional Environment Canada office for a technical description of the compatibility issues and solutions prior to installation. The NPRI Web site will be updated as necessary should any new issues be discovered, http://www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/npri.

Disclaimer: Environment Canada (or those companies whose products were used to create this product) assumes no liability for any special, incidental, indirect or consequential damages whatsoever including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information, or any other pecuniary loss arising from the use of this software. The user, through use of this software, also agrees to save harmless the Queen from such damages or losses as described.

All documents on the CD are available in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. If you wish to access these documents and do not have a copy of Adobe Acrobat 5 or better already installed on your computer, a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6 is included on the CD and can be installed on your PC.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Before you install the NPRI software, please note that the following is considered the minimum requirement for using the NPRI Reporting Software.

  • Windows 9x (includes SE and ME), Windows NT version 4 Service pack 5 or above, Windows 2000, or Windows XP
  • Pentium I (100 Megahertz or better)
  • A video card capable of supporting 64,000 colours with VGA (640x480 pixel), or better, screen resolution. (The software will work in 256 colour mode, however, we recommend using 64,000 colours and SVGA (800x600 pixel) resolution when using this software.)
  • A CD-ROM drive
  • 32 megabytes RAM (64 megabytes or more is recommended)
  • A hard disk with 50 Mb of free space after Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4, service package 2 or better has been installed. Note: You will require 150 Mb or more free space on the hard disk drive if you are installing to the Windows installation drive (usually drive "C:"). This extra space is required to provide adequate room for the Windows operating system's temporary system files, i.e. swap files, and various other files stored in your "Temp" directories or elsewhere on the drive.
  • Required Microsoft components: Microsoft Windows Installer 2.x, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6, Microsoft Jet engine version 3.51 and Internet Explorer 5.x. (Recommended installation order... Windows Installer, IE 5, MDAC, and then MSJet.)

Installing the NPRI Reporting Software

If you are running any version of Windows (9x or NT) other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you may be asked to restart your system up to two times during the installation process. Once will be for the installation of the Windows Installer package. These restarts are required for the installation and for the software to properly function. These procedures may take a long time to complete on slower computers.

Windows 2000, XP and NT users

You may not be able to install the NPRI Reporting Software if you do not have sufficient privileges to do so, or if your company has security policies in place that prevent it. It is recommended that the reporting software be installed by someone with "Administrators" privilege on the system, for the software to be successfully installed.

You may encounter an error message from Windows Installer saying that a file it is trying to install is in use, or already on the system, and could not be installed. It means that the file being installed is a type of system file that your system already has installed. This message can be ignored.

CD Autorun Application

There is a CD browser application included on the 2003 version of the NPRI reporting CD-ROM and it should start automatically on insertion of the CD into the computer. Should the browser not start automatically, using Windows/NT Explorer, select your CD drive and double-click on "D:\Start.exe", if your CD drive is drive 'D'. Please review the CD-ROM Guide included with this package for more information.

Minor Problems That May be Encountered

No Response on Start-Up

When you launch the software under Windows 2000 and after you choose the language, an hourglass appears and then nothing occurs. This can happen if someone is using a Windows 2000 system while logged in with USER rights. You must have 'power user' or 'administrative' rights to launch the software in Windows2000. If for some reason you cannot get access to 'POWER USER' rights to run the software, an administrator can remove the READ ONLY rights to the folder where the software installs. (C:\PROGRAM FILES\NPRI-INRP) The administrator would need to right click this folder, choose "PROPERTIES" and remove the "READ ONLY" attributes from the folder. This will allow you to run the software while logged in with ‘USER’ rights.

Note: This will not occur under Windows XP, as the default setting for a sub-folder of the "PROGRAM FILES" folder does not have "READ ONLY" attributes.
-----

If you receive an error message with the header SERIOUS ERROR, there is a problem with the MS JET component. This problem can be resolved by downloading the latest version of MS JET from the Microsoft web site.

For convenience, the version for your operating system has been provided on the CD; however it is recommended that you check www.microsoft.com/downloads for the most current version. You should install the most current version of any Microsoft system components to protect your system.

If you are unsure of the version you require, please contact the NPRI Help Desk for assistance in locating the download that corresponds with your version of Windows.

Databases Not Found

If you receive the following error message: "ERROR: The NPRI Data could not be found in the following directory: C:\program files\NPRI-INRP\NPRI_WIN or the NPRI database is being used by another program or some of the databases are missing." This indicates that there is a problem with the MDAC component installed on the system.

To resolve this, the most current version of MDAC for your operating system can be downloaded from the Microsoft download web site, see above, however several versions are provided on the CD for your convenience. You should install the most current version of any Microsoft system components to protect your system.

Errors on Install

You try to install or uninstall the software and get this error: "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and the error refers to EDR200x.MSI file (where x being the number that corresponds with the year 2000 through 2003). This will occur if there is a corrupted or missing MSI file when installing.

You can download the MSI clean up utility from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301. There are two versions of the utility depending on the version of Windows you are using. These have been included on the CD for your convenience. It is important that you use the version for your operating system. The utility cleans registry entries that can cause the problem while installing or uninstalling the software.

-----
When installing the software, if you get the message "Error 1931", you can ignore the message by clicking "OK". For more information regarding this error, please reference article Q279177 from the Microsoft web site. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=279177

-----
There is a rare problem, that relates to a bug in the Microsoft Installer: the install goes into a loop on restart. This most often occurs when installing directly from a CD. Most often, this problem is fixed by canceling the install, copying the install program to your hard disk and run the install program from that copy.
-----

After a restart, a program other than the Reporting Software seems to run. This rare problem is most often associated with systems that have had a large number of programs installed. Canceling the other program's setup, and deleting all the files and directories in your various temporary directories and then restarting the Reporting Software's installation program will resolve this problem for most users. The TEMP directories are located in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP for Windows 95/98 users. For Windows NT/2000 users, the location is either C:\TEMP or C:\WINNT\TEMP. An easy way to clear the files is to rename the TEMP folder to something like TEMPOLD and then create a new folder called TEMP to take the place of the old one.

Please see the CD-ROM Guide for further information on separately installing the required Microsoft components. If this problem continues after the separate component install, please contact either the NPRI Help Desk or your regional Environment Canada office.

If you have any other concerns about installing the NPRI software, please visit our Web site at http://www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/npri/npri_soft_e.cfm or contact your local regional NPRI office for further information. The NPRI Web site is updated regularly should any new issues be discovered they will be listed there.
