Steps to Participation

In March, 2005, the mandatory GHG reporting system was launched. Facilities required to report were able to submit their 2004 emissions and related data over the Internet using an Electronic Data Reporting (EDR) system on the GHG Reporting web site. The information is collected by Statistics Canada on behalf of the Department of the Environment and various provincial/territorial governments.

There are 4 easy steps for reporters to follow.

Step 1

Identify if you are required to report

Determine whether the total GHG emissions from your facility meet or exceed the reporting threshold of 100,000 tonnes (100kt) or more of GHGs (in CO2 equivalent units) per year. If you have several facilities that meet or exceed the reporting threshold, a separate report must be submitted for each facility.

Step 2

Register Your Facility

If you are required to submit a report, register your facility to gain access to the EDR system. Registration must be completed before reports are submitted and each facility that is required to report must be registered separately.

Step 3

Record Facility ID number

Once you have registered your facility, you will be provided with a unique Facility ID for that facility. To gain access to the secure reporting system, you will need to enter the Facility ID and the password that you create when you log in for the first time.

Step 4

Complete and Submit Your Report

Proceed to the GHG Reporting web site to complete your report. On-screen instructions within the EDR system are available to help you complete and file your report. The EDR system allows you to save partial reports that can be completed or corrected at a later time.
