Problem:

When the infant carrier is being carried outside the vehicle, there is a possibility that the carrying handle will break allowing for the restraint and the infant to fall.

Background: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States opened an investigation into this problem due to a large number of complaints that had been received in the U.S. This information was given to Century who, in conjunction with both Transport Canada and NHTSA, has agreed to a Public Information Notice.

During use as a carrier, the carry handle is subject to repeated flexing due to the weight of the infant in the seat and the natural motion associated with walking by the caregiver. This flexing creates stress in the handle and can develop into a crack and eventually break.

Century has received two complaints of the handle breaking in Canada while Transport Canada has received none. This Notice only affects infant restraints that have a molded, one-piece, one-colour plastic handle.

Consumer Recourse: Consumers are to call the toll-free number (1-800-865-1419) to receive a replacement handle. Century and Transport Canada recommend continued use of the restraint while waiting for the replacement handle, but stress that when carrying the restraint outside the vehicle not to use the carrying handle.
