Issue: Evenflo has identified a problem with the seat belt webbing tabs on the Cozy Carry convenience base. These tabs may become overloaded when both the vehicle lap and shoulder belts are improperly routed under the tabs and then tightened by the user. If the plastic tabs are overloaded, stress marks appear as a whitening on the tabs. Such whitening means that the plastic may have been weakened and the performance of the infant restraint system could be degraded in the event of a motor vehicle collision.

The improper routing of the lap and shoulder belts through the tabs can result in the application of excessive forces being applied to the tabs when pulling on the shoulder belt to properly secure the infant restraint in the vehicle. Shown below is a schematic of the convenience base showing proper vehicle lap and shoulder routing through the tabs on the base.

Thread the lap portion of the seat belt through the base, and under the tabs (B) and buckle the seat belt. Note: DO NOT route the shoulder belt under the tabs at this time.

Evenflo Canada has announced a free safety upgrade for the affected Cozy Carry infant restraint systems and the Cozy Carry infant restraints that were purchased with an Evenflo stroller. If you have an affected unit please call 1-800-233-5921 or contact Evenflo on their web site www.evenflo.com.

The issue was identified by Evenflo through their customer service department. The “USA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration” has been advised of the issue and recommends that Evenflo conduct this safety up-grade program. To date, there have been no motor vehicle collisions reported in Canada or the USA where the tabs have failed on the Evenflo Cozy carry infant restraint system.

From the available information, this restraint system is in compliance with the applicable safety regulations. Nevertheless, we recommend that owners of an affected restraint system contact Evenflo. We will continue to monitor this issue and take any appropriate action deemed necessary.
