6 February 2006 -- The first session of the Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control opens today in Geneva. Countries at this first session will discuss technical, procedural and financial issues relating to the implementation of the treaty — such as the establishment of a permanent secretariat, funding and financial support for developing countries.

World Cancer Day: global action to avert 8 million cancer-related deaths by 2015
3 February 2006 -- Cancer is a leading cause of death globally: an estimated 7.6 million people died of cancer in 2005. WHO is working to achieve a global goal of reducing chronic disease death rates by 2% per annum from 2006 to 2015, which would avert more than 8 million of the projected 84 million deaths due to cancer in the next decade.
