Premier's Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions Premier's Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions

In 2004 Mayor Gray was one of seven Mayors asked by the Premier to participate on the Premier’s Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Illness and Addictions. As a result of Task Force’s work, senior levels of government announced $20.8 million in funding for eight new housing developments, in six communities, in March 2005. Kelowna received $5 million out of the $20.8 million for two initiatives.

The two developments include a 30-unit apartment building for homeless people with mental illness and addictions, and the relocation of the Kelowna Gospel Mission. The City is committed to providing properly zoned sites for both initiatives, which are currently in the planning stages. The projects are designed to help people move beyond temporary shelter to more secure housing, greater self-reliance and ultimately to employment and independence. This requires a combination of support services and housing.
