Mission Recreation ParkCapital News Centre in Mission Recreation Park

The Capital News Centre in Mission Recreation Park is Kelowna’s newest recreation facility. On Gordon Drive at Lexington, the $16.5 million facility offers:

· two NHL-size ice surfaces
· two indoor playing fields
· fitness centre and indoor running track
· leisure skating area
· physiotherapist’s office
· concession stand and restaurant

The recreation facility has already gained notice with an Environmental Excellence Award from Aquila Networks Canada. A number of energy efficient innovations including a geothermal system, ceramic insulating paint and an ice plant heat recovery system are expected to achieve annual energy cost savings of approximately $81,000.

The new recreation facility is a cornerstone of the multipurpose Mission Recreation Park. With more than 55 hectares, the park is twice as large as the Parkinson Recreation Centre site doubling our potential for sports tourism, a rapidly expanding industry that already contributes more than $31 million to the local economy.

Over the next 20 years plans for Mission Recreation Park call for an aquatic centre, two additional indoor ice surfaces and two new playing fields. Concept plans for the entire site call for four softball diamonds, three artificial turf fields, a washroom/concession building, a skate park and much more.
