Roadway EngineeringRoadway Engineering is responsible for the design and construction of City transportation projects and for the rehabilitation of existing infrastructure works.

Major Road Projects Now Underway

Design

Minor roadway designs are completed in-house by our own design technicians. These designs are reviewed, checked and sealed by a City Engineer.

Major designs are usually completed by private engineering firms. Requests for proposals are issued to a select group of qualified firms. These proposals are rated and the design, whether it be conceptual, preliminary or final, is awarded to the successful firm.

Meetings are held with the City and other affected groups throughout the design process.

Construction

Minor construction, base preparation and repair of existing facilities is often completed by City crews.

Construction of major projects is put out for public tender and awarded to the lowest qualified bidder. Management of the project is generally done by the engineering firm responsible for the design and by the City.

All work is inspected during the construction process to ensure required specifications are met.

Rehabilitation of Existing Infrastructure Works

Existing infrastructure works include roadways, sidewalks, bicycle networks and bridges.

Inspection of these works is done on a regular basis to identify areas that require rehabilitation and to ensure that the facilities perform adequately for their design life-span.

Roadways are monitored by our Pavement Management System. All City roadways are tested on a continual basis for surface condition, roughness and strength. The system identifies and prioritizes roads that require remedial work.
