Recycling

The City of Kelowna and the Regional District of the Central Okanagan are partners in local recycling operations offering both depots and curbside collection.

Curbside collection began on July 1, 2000 for homeowners receiving city garbage collection service; the program has proven to be a great success capturing 40% more material than the depot-only system.

Recyclables are to be placed in clear or see-through blue bags and placed at the curb on the same day as regular garbage collection, every other week. No sorting is required and there is no limit on the number of bags collected.

Materials accepted include:

  • tin cans
  • aluminum
  • corrugated cardboard and boxboard (e.g. cereal boxes)
  • magazines, newspaper, and paper
  • glass jars and bottles
  • phone books and
  • #2 recyclable plastic (e.g. milk jugs).

Recycling depots accept extra materials and recyclables from apartments, multi-family customers and small businesses.

The Kirschner Road depot (1988 Kirschner Road) is open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The bottle depot closes daily at 5:00 p.m. and is closed on all statutory holidays.

The Glenmore Landfill at 2105 Glenmore Road is open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. except Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The Metro Materials Recovery Inc. depot (144 Cambro Road) is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and closed statutory holidays.
