Environment Division staff are also integral to environmental protection through policy review and enforcement. The City’s environmental technicians, for example, review City infrastructure projects and private land development proposals for potential environmental impacts, and to ensure they meet federal, provincial, and municipal requirements.

They also administer the City’s Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drain Regulation Bylaw; issue Waste Discharge Permits; coordinate monitoring activities; review business licenses and building permits for compliance with City bylaws and policies; interpret regulatory requirements for City operations; develop pollution prevention programs and field inquiries or complaints from the public and the media.
