Vehicle Emissions Clinic

The 2005 Vehicle Emissions Clinic will be held at the Parkinson Recreation Centre at Spall Road and Highway 97.

Thursday May 12th 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Friday May 13th 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Saturday May 14th 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Regional District's Air Quality Program, the Okanagan College Automotive Department and Environment Canada are co-hosting this year's clinic.

Environment Canada staff and OUC Automotive students will check your vehicle's tire pressure, measure the concentration of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the exhaust and tell you approximately how much carbon dioxide your vehicle is emitting. They will also check to see that your gas cap seals properly to ensure that no evaporated fuel is escaping into the air, which can be harmful to the environment and to your fuel economy.

Maximum allowable emission limits are based upon the vehicle model year, weight and engine size. A properly tuned vehicle with its original emissions equipment in place and in functioning order will have no difficulty passing the emissions test. The passing criteria for the clinic tests are similar to the Greater Vancouver Regional District's AirCare Program.

Failing vehicles receive an underhood inspection that includes a visual check to ensure there has been no tampering with the emission control devices, and a pre- and post-catalytic converter temperature check to ensure that the catalyst is functioning properly.

Automobiles release millions of tons of pollutants into the atmosphere. In fact, they represent one of the largest sources of air pollution in Canada, especially in our urban areas. However by maintaining your vehicle properly you can help reduce your vehicle's emissions, and in turn, improve the environment for all Canadians.

By reducing your vehicle's emissions you will also be doing your part for the Government of Canada's One-Tonne Challenge, a challenge issued to each Canadian to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne each year.

By properly maintaining your vehicle according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule, you can potentially reduce your emissions by one-third of a tonne each year. If you simply inflate your tires to the proper pressure you can reduce fuel consumption by 10%, and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately one-third of a tonne.

Remember : No Fees - No Fines .
Stop by the PRC parking lot the check-up costs nothing.

At the 2004 Vehicle Emissions Clinic 80% of the 600 vehicles tested passed inspection!
