Aerobatics

As part of every pilot's flight training, they are expected to be able to do some types of aerobatic manoeuvres. Conducted at safe altitudes and under supervision, steep turns, spins and spiral dives are all practiced in preparation for a pilot's flight test.

When people think about aerobatics however, its often in association with terms like loops, rolls, inverted flight and the type of flying demonstrations that are seen at airshows around the country every year.

Aerobatics

Learning to correctly perform areobatics, under the guidance of a qualified aerobatic instructor with an aircraft intended for that purpose can bring added confidence and skills to any pilot.

The subject of aerobatics, describing where and under what circumstances a pilot can do this kind of flying is detailed in section 602.27 and 602.28 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.

Provided a pilot complies with the conditions listed in the regulatory exemption, a Special Flight Operations Certificate, (SFOC), is no longer required to conduct areobatics within controlled airspace.

A SFOC is required however for aerobatic flights over assemblies of people, (usually at an airshow), below 2,000 feet above ground level, or in conjunction with an aerobatic competition.
