Saturn, sixth planet from the sun has a ring system, which is the most extensive and brilliant of all the planets in the solar system. Though they look continuous from Earth, Saturn’s rings are actually composed of innumerable small particles, each in an independent orbit. There are over 1000 rings, which surround Saturn and have fascinated Earth-bound astronomers for centuries. The rings are made up of ice and rock particles--some as big as houses--that were probably pieces of comets or asteroids, which broke up before they could reach the planet.

Unlike Earth, Saturn is a planet that spins very rapidly on its axis. As a result, the poles (top and bottom of the planet) flatten out and the equator swells up, making the planet look more square than any other.
