Transport Canada works to improve safety at railway crossings and monitors Canada's rail infrastructure in areas such as its impact on the environment and sustainable transportation, safety and accessibility.   We also play a role in the transport of dangerous goods.

Safety at railway crossings

• Direction 2006: partners in transportation safety - Transport Canada's role in the reduction of highway/railway grade crossing collisions and trespassing incidents.

• Guideline for inspecting and testing preemption of interconnected traffic control signals & railway crossing warning systems -  This guide deals with public safety at road/railway grade crossings.  
• Operation lifesaver - Site sponsored by The Railway Association of Canada and Transport Canada and works in co-operation with the Canada Safety Council and provincial safety councils/ leagues to reduce the number of accidents that result in fatalities, injuries, and monetary losses.
• Procedures and conditions for eliminating whistling at public crossings - Engine whistling requirements are controlled through the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR).

Rail infrastructure

• Accessible transportation - Transport Canada is working to develop and promote strategies and policies that seek to provide accessibility for persons with disabilities, seniors, and other citizens with unique needs. 
• Passenger rail car accessibility and terms and conditions of carriage by rail of persons with disabilities - Canadian Transportation Agency's code of practice designed to improve the accessibility of rail travel to persons with disabilities.
• Rail bridges - Transport Canada is responsible for the safety oversight of federally regulated railway bridges. Oversight activities include: promotion, monitoring and enforcement.
• Railway crossings facts - Transport Canada has a permanent safety inspection program to monitor railway crossings, to ensure standards are met under the Railway Safety Act, and to identify areas for improvement. 

Transport of dangerous goods

The TDG Directorate serves as the major source of regulatory development, information and guidance on dangerous goods transport for the public, industry and government employees.

• CANUTEC is the Canadian Transport Emergency Centre operated by Transport Canada to assist emergency response personnel in handling dangerous goods emergencies.
