How to Apply for Funding

1. Review CIHR's Current Funding Opportunities, identify your opportunity of interest, and review its description. To prevent duplicate reviews of the same application, applicants may not submit the same (or very similar) application to more than one funding opportunity simultaneously. Consult the subsection titled Restriction on Duplicate Applications of CIHR's Grants and Awards Guide for further information.

2. Refer to the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide for information on CIHR funding policies as they relate to the funding of research, eligibility guidelines, and other research related policy.

3. Refer to CIHR's policy on Acceptable Application Module Formats.

4. If you are applying to a regular opportunity (part of CIHR's regular competition cycle), consult the Application Packages to determine what modules are required to complete your letter of intent, registration or application.

5. If you are applying to an occasional opportunity (competition that may only occur once), consult the "How to Apply" section in the description of the funding opportunity.

6. New users > Register to obtain a CIHR PIN. This will allow you to access the CIHR Web forms and to validate your Common CV for CIHR. Please note that the CIHR PIN cannot be used to logon to the Common CV, which is an external site.

7. New users > Register with the Common CV network. This will allow you to access the Common CV.

8. Registered users > Logon to CIHR Web Forms and to the Common CV to complete the necessary modules.

9. New users and Registered users > When completing the necessary modules:

  • Review the screen instructions and the instructions on the forms and provide clear and concise answers to all applicable questions in one of the official languages.
  • Complete the necessary modules on the CIHR Web forms website, noting that some data requirements are program-specific (Exception: If you plan on submitting an Operating Grant application to the Neuroscience or Behavioural Sciences Committees (NSA, NSB, BSA, BSB & BSC) in the March 2006 Operating Grants Competition, you will be able to complete the necessary modules on ResearchNet starting in January 2006).
  • Complete a Common CV (for CIHR) for each applicant and training supervisor (if applicable) by entering the data requirements which are common to all agencies on the first screen of each section (Identification, Contact Information, etc.) and by completing additional CIHR-specific data.
  • Where applicable, complete any other attachment or form required. These forms are usually provided in the description of the funding opportunity and/or the application package or in the List of Forms and Guidelines for Completion.

10. New users and Registered users > When compiling the modules into an Application Package:

  • Ensure that the application package is complete. The application package must contain the required number of copies (plus the signed original) of each module, attachment and form required by the program. (Exception: CIHR is currently piloting a new application process for the electronic submission for Operating Grant applications to the Behavioural Sciences or Neurosciences peer review committees. For these pilot participants, only the original consent form and page 1 and 2 of the Research Module are required.)
  • Bind the original with elastic(s) or a bulldog clip. Do not staple the original as certain pages are removed and used for administrative purposes. Copies of the modules may be stapled, but they must be bound separately from the attachments (Cerlox or spiral bindings are not permitted)
  • For all funding opportunities, compile the modules (original and copies) in the following order, from top to bottom: Research or Training Module with supporting documentation, Operating Budget Module (if applicable), Industrial Partnership Module (if applicable) and the CV Module for each applicant and training supervisor (if applicable).

11. A complete application package must be submitted for each funding opportunity of interest with the required number of copies by the deadline date.

Notes about CIHR submissions and deadlines

  • Material submitted in previous applications is not available to reviewers; therefore, the new material should contain all the information required for the evaluation of the application
  • Deadline dates indicate the latest acceptable date for a courier-stamped application
  • If the deadline date falls during a weekend or a holiday, CIHR considers the next business day as the deadline date
  • CIHR will not accept late or incomplete application packages, nor will it accept late documentation, except for notices of acceptance of publications, letters confirming academic appointment, and notices of any other funding requested or received.

Unless otherwise indicated in the program description, all submissions should be sent to the address below. CIHR will not pick up any submissions that are not sent directly to this address:
