The greatest known emerging health threat that we face as a global community is pandemic influenza, which can affect the entire globe. There were three influenza pandemics in the last century and scientists recognize that another is inevitable.

The Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan maps out how Canada will prepare for and respond to an influenza pandemic. Federal, provincial and territorial governments collaborated on its development.

On October 24-25, 2005, Canada will host an international meeting of Ministers of Health to enhance global planning and collaboration in advance of a possible influenza pandemic. The meeting will support and contribute to other international initiatives related to pandemic influenza preparedness and response.

People are exposed to different strains of the influenza virus many times during their lives. Even though the virus changes, their previous bouts of influenza may offer some protection against infection caused by a similar strain of the virus. However, three to four times each century, for unknown reasons, a radical change takes place in the influenza A virus causing a new strain to emerge.
