Current state at the stations

To select the most recent graph choose a station and type and click on the icon. To see plots for all stations click on the icon in the last row. The year-to-date images are normally updated daily at 1400 UTC. Today's plots are updated every hour between 1400 and 2300 UTC. Previous years images are contained in an archive accessible by FTP.

WARNING: The data are processed in near real-time, have not been fully validated, and are preliminary.

NOTE: This near-real-time system is automated. If a system problem occurs outside of regular working hours, it will not be fixed until the following work day.

Current View

The pictures show current sky and instrument images taken in 10 (sky) or 30 (instrument) minute intervals at different sites. The pictures from Mauna Loa observatory are provided by the Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The times shown at the bottom of each photo are UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, GMT)

Year-to-Date Total Ozone Time Series Graphs

The graphs show daily mean total ozone values (in Dobson Units) as a function of the season over Canadian stations for the current year up to yesterday. The results of most accurate Brewer direct sun measurements are shown in red, all other types of data are shown in blue. The green line indicates total ozone values smoothed by one month running mean. The dashed lines represent “normal”, pre-1980 total ozone annual cycle and two standard deviations envelope for daily mean total ozone. The actual data are available (typically, with one month delay) from the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Center (WOUDC).

Year-to-Date Daily Maximum UV Index

The UV index plots are based on ground-based measurements by Brewer spectrophotometers carried out by the Science and Technology Branch. The actual measurements are indicated by the red dots. Estimates of UV Index for clear sky no-snow conditions and “normal” pre-1980 total ozone values are shown by the blue line. Estimates of UV Index for clear sky no-snow conditions and each day's total ozone values are shown by the magenta line. The time is shown as both local (in a time zone) and solar (the sun is in its highest position over the horizon exactly at noon).

Year-to-Date UV Index Plots

The plots show the measured by Brewer spectrophotometers UV index values as a function of the season and the time of the day over Canadian stations for the current year up to yesterday. The time is shown as a solar time, i.e. the sun is in its highest position over the horizon exactly at noon. The gray areas indicate periods with no observations. The actual spectral UV data are available (with some delay) from the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Center (WOUDC). UV Index forecast for selected Canadian cities is available from the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC).

Year-to-Date Ozonesonde Profiles

This section contains plots of the time-altitude cross-section of the ozone partial pressure measured by ECC ozonesondes at 10 Canadian stations. Ozone partial pressure is given in nanobars. The actual data are available (typically, with one month delay) from the World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Center (WOUDC).

Today's UV Index Plots

The UV index plots are based on ground-based measurements by Brewer spectrophotometers carried out by the Science and Technology Branch. The actual measurements are indicated by red dots and the red line. Estimates of UV Index for clear sky no-snow conditions and “normal” pre-1980 total ozone values are shown by the blue line. Estimates of UV Index for clear sky no-snow conditions and today's total ozone values are shown by the magenta line. If today's total ozone is normal the magenta line will cover the blue line. The time is shown as both local (in a time zone) and solar (the sun is in its highest position over the horizon exactly at noon). The plots are updated every five minutes. You need to click on “Refresh” to see the updates.
