Contributing to the Canadian economy

Defence investments bring prosperity to businesses, industries and communities across Canada. With more than 111,000 people on the payroll, Defence is Canada's second-largest employer and the largest single public service employer, making a significant contribution to local, provincial and territorial economies.

In Canada alone, Defence spending for fiscal year 2003-2004 on salaries, daily operations, grants and contributions and capital investment in equipment and infrastructure amounted to Cdn $10.5 billion.

In the same year, Defence invested more than $3 billion in defence-related industries such as aerospace, shipbuilding, weapons, armoured vehicles and electronics. Defence also spent about $3.9 billion in the goods and services industries, such as construction, fuel-supply, transport and other essential services.

Working through international and industrial programs, Defence also helps Canadian businesses sell their produces all over the world. Throughout Canada, thousands of businesses and tens of thousands of jobs depend on investment from Defence.

Canada's partnerships with its allies also benefit the Canadian economy. In 2003-2004, NATO allies spent about $130 million in Canada by participating in Defence-sponsored bilateral training programs and activities.
