Memorial Cairn Design / Construction
A Memorial Cairn will be installed in the Canadian Sections of the various Cemeteries to identify the section and also to identify those Canadians buried there and whose graves have been lost.
The Memorial Cairns will be fabricated of light gray granite with a Maple Leaf inscribed at the top. The text will be in English, French and German for sites in Germany and English and French for sites in France. Where graves have been lost, the Memorial Cairn will contain the name and the date of death for each individual. Please view the drawings used for the Tender Proposal for additional information.
The contract for the manufacture of the Memorial Cairns was tendered through Public Works Government Services Canada, Koblenz, Germany office and closed in mid February 2002. The contract has been awarded to Eastern Ontario Cemetery Memorials, Kemptville, Ontario.
The granite has been received and cut to size. Engraving of the text on each is being carried out at this time. Once complete, the Memorial Cairns will be transported to Europe by ship and will be installed by local contractors at each of the locations.
Photos of various stages of the manufacture are available in the "Photo Gallery". Additional photos will be added as the work progresses.
