CF Operations in Sudan

In the interests of global security and human rights, the International Policy Statement commits Canada to helping people in regions of conflict to regain stability and build lasting peace.

As part of this commitment, Canada is actively involved in peacekeeping efforts in Sudan and is participating in both the UN peacekeeping efforts in Southern Sudan and is also contributing to the African Union Mission in Darfur. In total, more than 100 CF personnel will contribute to these separate missions in an effort to bring stability and security to Sudan.

To support the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), the CF will provide up to 41 personnel to serve at the UN force headquarters, and as military observers. The CF contribution to UNMIS is known as Operation Safari , for more information click here [ Op SAFARI ]

Canada launched its support to the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) with a contribution of more than $1.4 million worth of basic army equipment, including helmets and protective vests, delivered as AMIS mobilized to provide security and stabilization in Darfur. On July 28, 2005, Defence Minister Bill Graham announced further support to the AU mission in the form of a loan of 105 armoured personnel carriers to enhance the capabilities of the AU mission in Darfur. A total of 67 CF personnel deployed to support the AU mission in Darfur by providing technical expertise, and training on the operation of the armoured vehicles. The CF contribution to the AU is known as Operation Augural , for more information click here [ Op AUGURAL ]
