Basic Officer Training or Recruit Training are extremely physically demanding in both strength and endurance. One of the most important things you can do to make your basic training easier is to ensure that you are in good physical condition. Physical fitness is a very important aspect of everyone's life but it is especially important for the service member. Physical activity is emphasized during basic training, so the more fit you are when you arrive, the easier the training should be for you. If you have not been too active in the past, start a fitness program now! Remember, there are physical fitness standards to achieve. For some they will be easy and for others they will be difficult.

To ensure that you are ready for the demands of basic training, you will be required to complete a fitness evaluation. There are four test items in this evaluation: a step test (aerobic fitness), a push-up test and a sit-up test ( physical endurance), and a grip test (muscle strength). The Recruiting Centre will provide you with the booklet or a CD-ROM entitled Physical Fitness for Applicants to the Canadian Forces (Pre-enrollment Information and Guide to Self-Preparation for Basic Training) which will outline the minimum requirements and provide a sample training plan to help you attain these requirements. Please consult it and do the self-test. If you are successful, return it to the Centre and they will schedule your Evaluation Test.

If you have difficulties with some or all areas of the pre-test, follow the training tips for a week or two and then try the self-administered test again. Once successful, go back to the Recruiting Centre to schedule your Evaluation Test.
