Testimonial: Student enjoys benefits of joining the Reserves

VALCARTIER, Que. — While in high school Second-Lieutenant Karine Lebel decided to join the Army Reserve and she does not have any regrets.

She has served as an artillery officer and a member of the 62nd Régiment, d’artillerie de campagne (ARC) in Shawinigan for the past three years. 2Lt Lebel graduated from an eight-week artillery officer course in Shilo, Manitoba, in August. She says that there were many challenges she had to overcome.

“I was the only female and the only Francophone on the course.” While the culture and surroundings were completely different than Quebec, she says the experience was very positive. “I learned organizational skills in the Army and it has helped me at school,” says the 19-year-old university student. In her second year of civil engineering at Laval University in Quebec, she says that there are similarities between studying at university and working in her military profession. “The artillery is very technical and so is engineering.”

The CF helps with the cost of her education. “My tuition in engineering is about $4 000 a year, and the military is reimbursing me half of this each year.”
