MINISTER PETTIGREW CONDEMNS JAKARTA BOMBING
Minister of Foreign Affairs Pierre Pettigrew today condemned the car bomb attack
outside the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, which has reportedly killed at
least eight people and wounded over 165.
“Canadians are shocked by this shameful act of terrorism, and we extend our sincere
condolences to the families of the victims,” said Minister Pettigrew. “We strongly
condemn those responsible and remain committed to working with Indonesia, Australia
and our other partners around the world in the global fight against terrorism.”
The Canadian Embassy in Jakarta reports that no Canadian citizens were killed in the
attack, although one was treated for minor injuries and released from hospital.
Embassy officials are working to contact the more than 800 registered Canadians living
in Jakarta to determine their safety, alert them to the situation and advise them to
continue to avoid public areas.
