CANADA WELCOMES CAMBODIA TO THE ASEAN-CANADA ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AGREEMENT

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today signed an exchange of letters welcoming the accession of Cambodia to the 1993 Canada- ASEAN Economic Co-operation Agreement. The signing took place during a meeting between Minister Axworthy and his Cambodian counterpart, Hor Namhong, during the ASEAN Regional Forum and Post-Ministerial Conference meetings in Singapore, which are being held from July 25 to 28.

"Canada is pleased to welcome Cambodia as a party to the Canada-ASEAN Economic

Co-operation Agreement," said Mr. Axworthy. "Further expanding this agreement will contribute to the prosperity of our economies and, by extension, to stability in the region."

The Canada-ASEAN Economic Co-operation Agreement formalizes enhanced

co-operation in the industrial, technical, commercial, and development co-operation fields. More specifically, the agreement promotes regular consultations between the private sector and governments to undertake bilateral and regional economic projects. It also encourages the parties to promote a mutually beneficial investment climate.

In addition to Cambodia, parties to the Canada- ASEAN Economic Co-operation Agreement include Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. With the accession of Cambodia, Burma remains the only ASEAN member that is not a party to the agreement.
