AXWORTHY AND EGGLETON WELCOME NEW
NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy and National Defence Minister Arthur Eggleton today welcomed the
appointment of United Kingdom Defence Minister George Robertson as the next Secretary-General of the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
"Mr. Robertson demonstrated outstanding ability as a minister, and his experience in European politics and
international relations will be a great asset," Minister Axworthy said. "His leadership will be valuable as the
Alliance pursues peace in the Balkans and implements the decisions of the Washington Summit."
"Mr. Robertson played a leading role in NATO's response to the Kosovo crisis," Minister Eggleton said. "He is
eminently qualified for this important new post in which he will enjoy Canada's support and confidence."
The two ministers also paid tribute to the outstanding work of the outgoing Secretary-General, Javier Solana,
and wished him success as High Representative for the European Union's common foreign and security policy,
where he will make a vital contribution to strengthening transatlantic links.
