CANADA WELCOMES ACCORD ON NATIONAL RECONCILIATION IN CÔTE D'IVOIRE

Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham today welcomed the signing of an agreement between the Government of Côte d'Ivoire, major political parties and rebel groups. The agreement, brokered by the French government, laid out a comprehensive process of national reconciliation that was endorsed by the Conference of African Heads of State in Paris. Canada was also represented at the negotiations, which took place in Linas-Marcoussis, France.

"This accord is an important step toward restoring peace, stability and economic normality in Côte d'Ivoire and west Africa," said Mr. Graham. "We urge all parties to fully implement the agreement. Canada supports the post-conflict reconciliation process, which is closely linked to the spirit of the G8 Africa Action Plan and the New Partnership for Africa's Development."

Mr. Graham applauded the important role that the French government and the Economic Community of West African States played in the successful conclusion of the negotiations. He condemned weekend violence that erupted in Abidjan following the conclusion of the accord and called for restraint. He also reiterated Canadian support for an independent investigation into human rights abuses in Côte d'Ivoire, to ensure that all the facts can be established so that those responsible are brought to justice.

In concluding, Mr. Graham expressed hope that the accord will signal a renewed commitment to political dialogue, respect for constitutional institutions and the creation of conditions that will enable internally displaced persons and refugees to return home.
