KILGOUR TO VISIT WASHINGTON
Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) David Kilgour today announced that he will visit Washington, D.C., on April 14 and 15,
2003, to participate in an international seminar entitled "Sri-Lanka: Reconstruction and Development," hosted by U.S.
Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage.
"Canada is encouraged by current progress toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sri Lanka," said Mr. Kilgour.
"We welcome this chance to exchange views with members of the international community on how best to support
reconstruction and development efforts needed to achieve a durable peace."
The seminar, which will be attended by representatives from many countries and international organizations, will provide
an update on the Sri Lankan peace process and lay the groundwork for a donors conference scheduled to take place on June
9 and 10, 2003, in Tokyo, Japan.
In 2002, Canada provided $12.3 million in development assistance to Sri Lanka, including $2.3 million in direct support of
the Sri Lankan peace process and $120,000 to establish a Mine Action Resource Centre in Colombo.
In Washington, Mr. Kilgour will also meet with James Kelly, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific
Affairs, and other State Department officials.
