APPOINTMENT TO EXPORT DEVELOPMENT CANADA
International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today announced the appointment of J. Michael Horgan of Ottawa,
Ontario, as a director of Export Development Canada (EDC).
Mr. Horgan is currently Senior Associate Deputy Minister with the Department of Finance, a position he has
held since 2001. Prior to this, he was President of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, where he had
previously served as Executive Vice-President and Associate Deputy Minister.
Mr. Horgan has a wealth of public-sector experience and a vast knowledge of public policy issues, having filled
key roles in a number of federal departments and agencies over nearly 25 years of government service.
EDC is a Crown corporation that operates as a commercial financial institution. For more than five decades, it
has provided a full range of trade finance products and services to help Canadian exporters and investors
capitalize on opportunities around the world. In 2002, EDC supported over $51 billion in exports and
international investments, and served more than 7,200 customers, 91 percent of which were small and
medium-sized businesses.
Mr. Horgan replaces Jonathan T. Fried, who was appointed to the position of Associate Deputy Minister of
Foreign Affairs, effective June 16, 2003.
