GRAHAM EXTENDS CONDOLENCES ON DEATH OF SWEDISH FOREIGN MINISTER
Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham today extended condolences to the people of Sweden and to the family of Anna
Lindh, Sweden's foreign affairs minister, on their tragic loss. Minister Lindh was the victim of a knife attack by an
unknown assailant while shopping in Stockholm yesterday. She passed away this morning as a result of her injuries.
"Canadians were shocked to learn of the terrible attack on Anna Lindh and are dismayed by the news of her death," said
Minister Graham. "We have lost a close friend whose vision and passion for improving the world around us remain an
inspiration to the international community. It was a privilege to know her and work with her. She represented the best of
Swedish values and was an effective advocate for them on the international stage. The thoughts and prayers of the Canadian
people go out to Anna Lindh's family and many friends, and to the people of Sweden on this senseless loss."
Minister Lindh worked tirelessly with like-minded countries such as Canada to promote international cooperation in
improving the welfare of individuals around the world. Her commitment to issues such as peacekeeping reform, human
security and sustainable development were greatly valued and will be sorrowfully missed.
Minister Graham had the benefit of meeting with the Swedish Foreign Minister on several occasions, including at the
Arctic Council 3rd Ministerial Meeting in October 2002.
Anna Lindh had been Sweden's foreign minister since 1998. She was married with two children.
