PETTIGREW ANNOUNCES CANADIAN DELEGATION ATTENDING FOURTH WTO MINISTERIAL IN DOHA, QATAR

International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew today announced the names of members of the Canadian delegation attending the fourth World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar from November 9 to 13.

The Canadian delegation will consist of federal government officials, parliamentarians, provincial and territorial government representatives and non-governmental advisors.

"This varied team of people brings a range of opinions to the table that serves the interests of all Canadians," said Minister Pettigrew. "The Doha Ministerial provides an excellent venue to exchange broad and diverse views on how to ensure citizens worldwide benefit from the global trading system."

Canada is seeking WTO negotiations that would open up markets for Canadian trade, update the multilateral system to reflect today's economic realities, and help the developing world to better reap the benefits of liberalized trade.

Minister Pettigrew tabled a document last week before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade, outlining Canada's WTO objectives. The objectives and further information on this year's Ministerial can be found at the following Web site: http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/tna-nac/wto-e.asp

Since well before the last WTO Ministerial meeting in Seattle in 1999, the Government of Canada has increased opportunities for Canadians to voice their ideas and opinions on Canada's trade agenda. The WTO Ministerial Conference takes place about once every two years and brings together ministers responsible for trade from all 142 WTO members.
