AXWORTHY TO TRAVEL TO BRUSSELS AND LONDON
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that he will attend a
special Ministerial meeting of the North Atlantic Council (NAC), the decision-making forum of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The meeting will
be held in Brussels on Tuesday, February 18.
"NATO is undergoing significant change. Decisions to be made in the months to
come will undoubtedly have profound implications for the future of Europe and for
the organization itself," said Mr. Axworthy. "We must ensure that all members of
the NATO alliance agree collectively on the course we will take on NATO
enlargement and other issues. I am particularly looking forward to reviewing
these subjects with Madeleine Albright, the new United States Secretary of State."
Major issues on the NAC agenda include the plan to invite new members to the NATO
alliance from Eastern and Central Europe; developing a new relationship with
Russia and other European countries; and internal reform. As well, discussion is
expected on the role of the Stabilization Force in Bosnia.
Other upcoming events in the NATO calendar include a meeting of foreign ministers
May 29-30 in Sintra, Portugal, and a Summit in Madrid, Spain, July 8-9.
After the NAC meeting, Mr. Axworthy will travel to London on Wednesday, February
19, where he will brief members of the British business community and media on the
1997 federal budget.
