LLOYD AXWORTHY TO MEET WITH MADELEINE ALBRIGHT

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy announced today that he will meet U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in Washington on March 4 to review key Canada-United States and multilateral issues.

"I look forward to discussing a wide range of issues in my first bilateral meeting with the new U.S. Secretary of State," said Mr. Axworthy. "Our two countries have worked together very closely in many areas and that fruitful relationship will continue."

Among the issues that are expected to be discussed are plans to enlarge the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), land mines, United Nations reforms and financing, the Pacific Salmon Treaty and peacebuilding in Haiti.

In addition, Mr. Axworthy will meet with Samuel Berger, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, to discuss preparations for Prime Minister Chrétien's forthcoming visit to Washington, April 7-9.
