AXWORTHY EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER IRANIAN GOVERNMENT
INVOLVEMENT IN MYKONOS CASE
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today expressed deep concern regarding
yesterday's verdict of a German court in connection with the "Mykonos" case. The
judgement stated that the highest levels of the Iranian state were implicated in
the killings of four Iranian Kurds in the Mykonos restaurant in Berlin, Germany,
in 1992.
"This verdict is being carefully reviewed by the Canadian government," said Mr.
Axworthy. "It is not acceptable that Iran or any other country attack an opponent
on foreign soil."
Canada has been consulting with its European Union, G-7 and other partners
regarding these latest developments. To help assess the implications of the
verdict, Canada's Ambassador to Iran has been recalled to Ottawa for
consultations, which will take place over the next few days.
