MARCHI ANNOUNCES NEW EDC PRESIDENT
International Trade Minister Sergio Marchi today announced the appointment of Mr.
Ian Gillespie as President of the Export Development Corporation (EDC).
At EDC for almost two decades, Mr. Gillespie has acquired considerable expertise
in helping Canadian businesses grow and prosper through exports and international
investment. He currently serves as the Crown corporation's Senior Vice President,
Risk Management and Corporate Performance.
As Canada's official export credit agency, EDC is a unique financial institution
that strengthens the global competitiveness of Canadian exporters and investors in
more than 200 countries by offering some of the most sophisticated trade finance
skills available in Canada today. In 1997, EDC's business volume is expected to
surpass $27 billion -- exceeding last year's record level of $22 billion.
The appointment is effective immediately.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Ian Gillespie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Queen's University in 1974
and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario in
1978. He was later awarded a CFA Charter from the Institute of Chartered
Financial Analysts in 1986. He began his career at Wood Gundy Limited in Toronto
in the Corporate Finance Department. Since 1978, Mr. Gillespie has held numerous
positions of increasing responsibility at the Export Development Corporation
including Area Manager, Export Financing; Assistant Vice President, Corporate
Affairs Group; Controller, Financial Planning; General Manager, Export Financing
Group; Assistant Treasurer; Vice President, Insurance; Senior Vice President,
Short Term Insurance; and presently as Senior Vice President, Risk Management and
Corporate Performance. As a member of the Executive Committee, he is also
Chairman of the Risk Management Committee and the Chairman of the Information
Systems Steering Committee. Mr. Gillespie was born in Toronto in 1952, and is
married with two children.
