DIPLOMATIC APPOINTMENT

Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy announces the appointment of Stanley E. Gooch as Ambassador to the United Mexican States.

Biographical Note

Stanley E. Gooch (BA, University of Alberta, 1964; MA, University of Alberta, 1966) joined the Department of External Affairs in 1966. He served abroad in Buenos Aires, Belgrade, Vienna and from 1986 to 1989 served as Ambassador to Costa Rica with concurrent accreditation to the Republics of El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama. In Ottawa, Mr. Gooch held a number of positions, including Director, United States Transboundary Division and Director General, Latin America and Caribbean Bureau. From 1991 to 1994, he was Assistant Deputy Minister, Latin America and Caribbean Branch. Since 1994, Mr. Gooch has served as High Commissioner to India. He is married to Nancy Gooch and they have two sons. He succeeds Marc Perron.
