SECRETARY OF STATE KILGOUR TO VISIT COLOMBIA, PERU
Secretary of State (Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour will visit Peru and
Colombia from November 6 to 13 to discuss a range of economic, political and
development issues.
"I look forward to broadening Canada's political and business links with both
Colombia and Peru," said Mr. Kilgour. "In the months leading up to the next Summit
of the Americas, it is also important to discuss some common approaches to
development and social issues."
In Peru, November 6-11, Mr. Kilgour will attend a meeting of the Canada-Peru
Business Council and meet with political and business figures to discuss trade,
investment, human rights and development issues.
He will also tour several development projects, including a technical school and a
centre that focusses on women's economic development, to get a first-hand
experience of how Canadian aid is helping to build local economies.
In Colombia, November 11-13, Mr. Kilgour will meet with business and government
leaders, including the mines and industry ministers, and the attorney general.
Issues expected to be discussed include: Canadian trade and investment, including
work on a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA); ongoing
progress on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA); democratic development and
human rights; and the April 1998 Summit of the Americas in Chile.
