CANADA NAMES COMMISSIONER GENERAL
AT LISBON EXPO '98
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy and Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila
Copps today announced the appointment of the Honourable John Roberts as
Commissioner General for Canada at Lisbon Expo '98. Mr. Roberts will serve as
Canada's Commissioner General for the duration of the exposition.
Portugal will host Expo '98 from May 22 to September 30 under the theme "The
Oceans: A Heritage for the Future." Participation in this exposition will allow
Canada to increase public awareness about its approach to conservation and
commitment to sustainable development through international co-operation, and to
promote the country as a world leader in ocean-related research, technology and
services.
John Roberts began his public service career as a Foreign Service Officer with the
Department of External Affairs, and was posted to the United Nations and to Paris.
He is a former parliamentarian who has held a number of ministerial portfolios,
including Science and Technology, and Environment.
Mr. Roberts has lectured widely at universities throughout North America and, most
recently, was a Visiting Lecturer on Environmental Management at Trent University
in Peterborough, Ontario. He is also the author of articles on politics, political
theory and environmental issues. He is a past director of the Canadian
Environmental Law Research Foundation and the Oceanic Society of the United
States.
