OUELLET WELCOMES RELEASE OF REPORT ON DECOMMISSIONING
OF ARMS IN NORTHERN IRELAND
Foreign Affairs Minister André Ouellet welcomed the release in Belfast today of
the report of the International Body on the Decommissioning of Arms in Northern
Ireland.
"The work of this three-member international body represents a valuable
contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland, a matter of importance for
many Canadians," said Mr. Ouellet.
The panel was established in December 1995 by the British and Irish governments
with a mandate to provide an independent assessment of the parties' commitment to,
and methods for, removing arms from Northern Irish politics.
The report and its recommendations are based on wide consultation with political
parties, the two governments and private individuals.
The International Body was chaired by George J. Mitchell, former Senate Majority
Leader of the United States. General A. John de Chastelain, former Chief of the
Defence Staff of Canada, and Harri Harmanni Holkeri, former Prime Minister of
Finland, were the other members of the panel.
