EGGLETON ANNOUNCES NEW INTERNET PAGE
ON CANADA AND THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION
The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister for International Trade, announced today
that the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade has posted a new
web page on its Internet home page focussing on Canada and the World Trade
Organization (WTO).
"Canada has played a key role in establishing the WTO," said Mr. Eggleton. "It is
in our interest to have a strong and effective rules-based trading system because
international trade is fundamental to economic growth and job creation in this
country."
The new service has been set up to inform Canadians on the WTO and its importance
to Canada. At the outset, there will be speeches and information on the Canadian
position on key multilateral trade policy issues in preparation for the
organization's first meeting of ministers in Singapore, December 9-13. New items
on the Singapore meeting will be added in coming days. The new site will have
links to the WTO's own Internet site.
The WTO, established January 1, 1995, oversees the multilateral trading system.
It has close to 130 members, covering most world trade.
