FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER OF EL SALVADOR TO VISIT CANADA
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that the Salvadoran Minister
of Foreign Affairs, Maria Eugenia Brizuela de Avila, will visit Canada from June 7 to 10.
Her visit follows her participation in the Organization of American States (OAS) General
Assembly which is taking place in Windsor from June 4 to 6.
"I welcome Minister Avila's participation in the OAS General Assembly, where we have
discussed important issues such as democracy and human security in the Americas,"
said Minister Axworthy. "Canada and El Salvador share similar concerns with respect to
peace, human security, democracy and prosperity in the hemisphere. Canada is
pleased to continue working with El Salvador in its efforts to entrench democratic
principles and increase prosperity for its people."
While in Ottawa, Ms. de Avila will meet with Minister Axworthy and Secretary of State
(Latin America and Africa) David Kilgour. They will discuss results from the OAS
General Assembly as well as a range of issues including human security, development
co-operation and trade.
"Canada and El Salvador are bound by strong political and economic ties," said
Secretary of State Kilgour. "I am pleased to be able to meet with Ms. Avila to exchange
views on how we can further strengthen those ties."
Ms. de Avila will also meet with public and private sector representatives in Quebec and
Ontario and the Salvadoran community in Ottawa, Quebec City, Montreal and Toronto.
