AXWORTHY VISITS WASHINGTON
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy will be in Washington, D.C., on June 15 and 16. While there, he
will undertake a number of activities to advance the human security agenda, including talks with U.S.
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, an address outlining the objectives for the upcoming
Organization of American States (OAS) mission to Peru and discussions regarding humanitarian
intervention.
"Sharing a continent has made Canada and the United States natural partners, and our democratic
traditions have made us allies," said Mr. Awxorthy. "At the same time, Canada is assuming a stronger
role in hemispheric affairs by investing in the future and democratization of the Americas."
On June 15, Mr. Axworthy will attend the inauguration of the Sol M. Linowitz Forum of the Inter-American Dialogue, an organization that promotes policy discussion in the hemisphere. In an address,
the Minister will highlight the strong role played by Canada in hemispheric affairs as chair of the OAS
General Assembly, and will discuss the upcoming OAS mission to Peru, to be headed by Secretary-General Gaviria and himself.
On June 16, the Minister will lead a round table discussion on conditions for preventive diplomacy and
humanitarian intervention organized by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He will
also deliver an address on the same subject during a luncheon at the Canadian Embassy.
Mr. Axworthy and Madame Albright will sign an agreement to extend the North American Aerospace
Defence (NORAD) Agreement for five years and the agreement on the operation of commercial remote
sensing satellite systems. They will also discuss other bilateral and multilateral issues, including the
upcoming International Conference on War-Affected Children to be held in Winnipeg this September.
