CANADIAN DELEGATION TO ATTEND 15TH WORLD YOUTH DAY
IN ROME
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy today announced that Dennis Mills, Member of
Parliament for Toronto-Danforth, will represent the Government of Canada at the15th
World Youth Day in Rome, Italy, on August 20.
Ontario Premier Mike Harris and the mayor of Toronto, Mel Lastman, will also travel to
Rome for the event.
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has offered to host World Youth Day in
Toronto in 2002. The final decision on the host city will be announced by Pope
John Paul II on August 20, at the conclusion of this year's World Youth Day. This year's
event is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of young people to Rome.
"Canada would be honoured to host World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002," said Minister
Axworthy. "This international gathering of young people at the invitation of Pope
John Paul II brings hope and confidence to youth all around the world."
