August 2, 2002 (2:20 p.m. EDT) No. 89

KILGOUR TO VISIT KOREA AND CHINA

Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific) David Kilgour today announced that he will visit Korea and China from August 6 to 17, 2002. Mr. Kilgour will be leading a 35-member Junior Team Canada mission to China.

"This visit will focus on exploring new trade opportunities with China and Korea, two of Canada's major export destinations," said Mr. Kilgour. "I also look forward to enhancing educational links with both countries, as well as discussing security, governance and development issues."

In Seoul, Mr. Kilgour will meet with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Kim Hang-Kyung, as well as Deputy Minister for Trade Kim Kwang-Dong. He will also give a speech to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Korea and participate in a roundtable discussion on inter-Korean relations and security on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, the Secretary of State will tour the Canadian Education Centre and visit Korea's National Cemetery, where he will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony to honour the fallen and visit the gravesite of Canadian Dr. Frank Schofield, the only foreigner to be buried at the cemetery. Finally, the Secretary of State will visit Panmunjom, where he will tour the Demilitarized Zone between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"Canada continues to support the policy of engagement between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and encourages broader international efforts to promote peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," said Mr. Kilgour.

In China, Mr. Kilgour will meet with government officials in Nanjing, Shanghai, Suzhou and Guangzhou. He will also launch the Junior Team Canada trade mission to China and participate in related networking activities, including delivering a number of speeches to bilateral and national trade organizations. In addition, the Secretary of State will speak to local and Canadian business people and Chinese students and visit several development projects funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. He will visit the Qinshan Phase III CANDU Reactor Project to see first-hand Canadian nuclear technology at work in China.

The Junior Team Canada Program gives select young Canadians the opportunity to work with small and medium-sized enterprises from across the country . The young participants then act as consultants for these export-oriented companies during trade missions.
